The Heavy Events is all about muscle, strength, athletism, and sheer determination!
The Heavy Events competition comprises two grades.
Gough CAT Oceania Heavyweight Championship
The Professional Heavy Athletes will be competing in eight disciplines, (Caber Toss, Stone Putt, Hammer Throw, Sheaf, Weight for Distance, Weight for Height, Hororata Stones and Farmers Walk) for the Gough CAT Oceania Heavyweight Championship title.
The Gough CAT Oceania Heavyweight Championship is an open event, not an invitational. A high level of competency is required to be competitive. Entrants must have competed at national level in Highland Games, athletics or strongman events. The field is limited to 12 competitors; if more entries are received the first event will be an elimination event with unsuccessful competitors being moved to compete in the Amateur competition.
There is a cash prize pool of $5900 for this competition.

Gough CAT Amateur Heavy Championship
Competing alongside the Professional Heavy Athletes a field of amateur men and women compete for Gough CAT Amateur Heavy Championship, for those entering the sport. Competitors test themselves over five disciplines: Caber Toss, Stone Putt, Hammer Throw, Weight for Distance and Sheaf.
A detailed schedule and the Games Programme will be sent out to all entrants in October, but the schedule essentially will be:
- 9.00am – practice session
- 10.00am – competition commences
- The competition will consist of four traditional Scottish Heavy events, which will include:
- Caber Toss
- Stone Putt (18lbs)
- Hammer throw (16lbs and 22lbs)
- Sheaf (12 and 16 lbs)
- Weight for Distance (28lbs)
- Farmers Walk: A single event option where competitors race along a course with 100lbs in each hand, with the winner covering the most distance (this is a separate competition and not included in the championship).
Amateur Men’s and Women’s Heavy Event Competition (4 events) = $20
Farmers Walk (1 event) = $5
We have competitor tee shirts, these are $20 and can be ordered when you enter. These will not be for sale on the day and must be pre-ordered. These will have AMATEUR 2018 on the back.

Gough CAT Amateur Men’s Champion – $100 and Championship trophy plus the winner will be sponsored to compete in Paeroa Highland Games and Tattoo on the February 2018 (conditions apply*).
Gough CAT Amateur Women’s Champion – $200 and Championship trophy.

To enter complete the online entry form, one form per competitor. Please where possible make payment by internet banking (see account details on form). All competitors will be issued tickets and you will need these to enter the event. Your supporters will need to purchase their tickets either prior to the event or on the day.
Entries close 23rd October 2018, late entries may be accepted if the category is not full, a $10 administration fee will be charged.
This event runs wet or fine. We have wet weather contingencies.

*Gough CAT Amateur Mens Champion will be sponsored to the Paeroa Highland Games and Tattoo on the 9th February 2018. Costs will be covered to a maximum of $400.00. This prize can not be transferred or redeemed for cash and must be used to compete in the 2018 Paeroa Highland Games and Tattoo heavyweight field events. The Hororata Highland Games will make and pay for travel arrangements.
