Let’s not forget the wonderful natural playground that is the Rakaia Gorge.  There’s fishing to be done, commercial jet boat rides to have and a wonderful leisurely walk up the Gorge.

Nestled under beautiful old trees, this is a lovely spot for an afternoon out.  Don’t forget to check out the power station while you are there.  Just down the road from the playground is the Lake Coleridge Arboretum. Many decades of dedication have gone into this regional treasure.

The newest playground in the area is set well back from the road with lots of grass to play in, and limited shade so bring a hat.

Need a break on the trip home or a change of scenery? This playground is on the main road, well fenced with loads of shade trees.  Pop across the road and grab an ice cream afterward from the Glentunnel Store to refuel.

Behind the Glentunnel School (near the camp ground) is a great Pump Bike track which everyone is welcome to use. It is a safe way for kids to try their bike skills and heaps of fun.

A hidden gem, down by the sale yards on Everett Street. This is a great playground, fully fenced, picnic tables but limited shade.

The Hororata Domain is the region’s best kept secret.  The third largest public reserve in Canterbury, this Domain is home to free public tennis courts, a kids playground, multiple walks, a horse cross country track and a race course. Of course, it is the home of the HORORATA HIGHLAND GAMES.  Visit the Hororata Garage for a legendary Hororata Pie and other supplies you may need, or grab a coffee at the Hororata Bar & Café. Pack your bikes; there is loads of space to play, but watch out for the lake behind the tennis pavilion you don’t want an unscheduled swim!
